concentration of proteins in Hemoce, whereas the others detected various concentrations in the solution. The Hemoce dilutions and the results obtained after processing these dilutions on different analyzers are shown in Fig. 1. Because Hemoce is itself a mixture of polypeptides, it is inaccurate to say that Hemoce positively interferes with some urine protein methods. Nevertheless, when determining urinary proteins in patients treated with plasma expanders such as Hemoce, analysts should be aware of the method used.

Distribution of transferrin saturation in an Australian population: relevance to the early diagnosis of hemochromatosis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS An elevated transferrin saturation is the earliest phenotypic abnormality in hereditary hemochromatosis. Determination of transferrin saturation remains the most useful noninvasive screening test for affected individuals, but there is debate as to the appropriate screening level. The aims of this study were to estimate the mean transferrin saturation in hemochromatosis heteroz...

Dysmetabolic Hyperferritinemia: All Iron Overload Is Not Hemochromatosis

Disturbances in iron metabolism can be genetic or acquired and accordingly manifest as primary or secondary iron overload state. Organ damage may result from iron overload and manifest clinically as cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus, arthritis, endocrine abnormalities and cardiomyopathy. Hemochromatosis inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder is the most common genetic iron overload disorder. E...

Correlation between iron status and genetic hemochromatosis (codon C282Y) in a large German population.

BACKGROUND Genetic hemochromatosis leads to iron overload in many tissues and may lead to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Early diagnosis and therapy are crucial. Since 80-100% of hemochromatosis patients of European origin are homozygous for a cysteine to tyrosine exchange in the HFE gene at codon 282, genetic screening might be useful. Representative population studies are neede...

The effect of transferrin polymorphisms on iron metabolism.

The effect of five different transferrin variants (TFv1, TFv2, TFv3, TFv4, and TFv5) on the hemoglobin level, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), ferritin level, percent transferrin saturation (%TS), and the unsaturated iron binding capacity (UIBC) was investigated in subjects with defined HFE haplotypes, 919 persons undergoing health screening and 113 patients with clinical hemochromatosis. The mos...

Hereditary hemochromatosis.

Hereditary hemochromatosis is an autosomal recessive disorder that disrupts the body's regulation of iron. It is the most common genetic disease in whites. Men have a 24-fold increased rate of iron-overload disease compared with women. Persons who are homozygous for the HFE gene mutation C282Y comprise 85 to 90 percent of phenotypically affected persons. End-organ damage or clinical manifestati...

Hemochromatosis: clinical implications of genetic testing.

Hemochromatosis is one of the most common genetic diseases affecting Canadians of European ancestry. However, too often this disease is diagnosed in people who do not have it and is missed in those who do. By the time a diagnosis is made on the basis of symptoms, irreversible organ damage has often occurred. A missense mutation (the C282Y cysteine-to-tyrosine substitution) on chromosome 6 of th...
